How to make Mixed Black
1. For a traditional mixed black Andy starts with burnt sienna and ultramarine blue
a. begin with equal amounts of both colors
b. mix together to create a translucent black
c. mix a small amount with white to see if your paint is too brown or blue
d. adjust until your paint is as equal brown as it is blue
2. Andy mixes a red/brown opaque paint called spanish earth with an translucent cobalt blue
a. start with the cobalt blue and mix the spanish earth into the blue until a dark color is created that is equally blue and "red"
b. check the black with white to make sure it is as equal as possible
3. Andy mixes this black using azo red deep and old holland's green umber
a. mix the red into the green paint
b. check the black with white
4. For a cool, translucent black Andy uses viridian and alizarin crimson
a. begin with equal amounts of both colors
b. mix together to create a translucent black
c. check with white
